Hunger Games Series by Suzanne Collins

I thought this was interesting and well written.  Katniss was a sympathetic character and the way the story was handled was creative and rarely predictable. The descriptions of creatures, people and cultures were well done also. It stayed a page turner until the end. It has the additional advantage that lots of others are reading it, so you have someone to discuss it with! Not to give too many spoilers, but the series as a whole does not have a traditional "happy ending".  BUT, I do think it feels real.  I don't think you can change the world without sacrifices being made. It is like the end of the Lord of the Rings, when Frodo says, "I tried to save the Shire, and it has been saved, but not for me. It must often be so, Sam, when things are in danger: some one has to give them up, lose them, so that others may keep them." In the end, you see what Katniss and her friends have given up, and also what they have gained. It is a place to have some adult thoughts!
