Flowers Confidential by Amy Stewart

When I was in middle school, I don't remember liking non-fiction, but that is only because I was reading the wrong stuff. Good non-fiction can be great. I really enjoyed this book. All the science stuff about selective breeding is in here and really well explained. There is also history and geography, but again only as it relates to flowers. I wouldn't have thought flowers are that interesting, but I had heard things about the book, so I gave it a try. It was great! Much more interesting than I had thought. Star-gazer lilies were created by this crazy guy and court battles were fought over them. The Dutch bankrupted their country over tulips. Scientists are searching to create a blue rose, and it is surprisingly hard...

One thing is read this book with the internet available. You will want to Google image search the myriad of flowers they talk about, so you will know what they all look like. Her descriptions are good, but they only make me want to see the real thing.
