Mister Max and the Book of Lost Things by Cynthia Voigt

I really liked this book. Max was a neat character- I liked his relationships with the other characters in the story. I liked how he used painting as meditation to solve problems. I liked the other characters. I liked how he drew on his parents theatrical background for inspiration.

Having said that though, this does require a fair suspension of disbelief. Max frequently poses as an adult with no questions asked. There isn't really a good explanation why they don't get the police involved in his parent's disappearence. And the money isn't realistic- a fifty dollar reward is gone almost immediately, but 10 dollars is a weeks rent.

Also, it is part of a series, so don't expect all your questions to be answered.

Having said that, let go and enjoy it!
