"Prairie Song" by Patricia Conrad (click for my response)

This book had great descriptions of prairie life. They talk about living in a "soddy"- a house made of grass and dirt blocks. The contrast between the doctor's wife and the established families really gives a picture of how little the pioneers could prepare for this life- some made it, some didn't! I found this book extremely sad, but it has stuck with me. I think I will find this book popping in to my head often.
