Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson

Another AWESOME graphic novel! Lots of us have had that experience of growing in a different direction than a friend. And it is hard and painful. I am sure that caterpillers struggle and hurt on the way to being butterflies, but that doesn't make it easy.

What I loved: Astrid is flawed but loveable. Like many of us, it never occurs to her that other people might see the world in a different way. And it shocks her when she finds it out. I liked the relationship between her and her mother. I loved that even though she knew that she was terrible at roller derby, she still dreamed of being the leader. (I totally remember planning to be an Olympic gymnast when I was 10, even though I couldn't even do a cartwheel!)

What else I loved: the roller derby stuff. I have seen a roller derby bout and it was a ton of fun. We got a backstage tour and got to practice some skills. The culture of derby is really unique and fun. If you get a chance, you should go!
