Sunny Side Up by Jennifer L. Holm

This was a deceptively simple book. At first it seems light and fun. But gradually, the deeper (and darker) reasons Sunny is in Florida emerge. I won't spoil anything here, but the authors' notes at the end of the book reveal the issues with Sunny's family, if you do want to know.

One thing I loved about this book was how it used inference. There are so many things that are not stated directly, but you are given all the clues. It also uses flashbacks very effectively to build the story by going back and forth in time. Paying attention to the dates at the top of the pages helps figure out when things are happening. I also love how Sunny finds strength in different comic book characters.
