NEW HOMEWORK PROTOCOL FOR SEMESTER 2!                  **CHECK BELOW FOR COPIES**

Students should still be reading 100 minutes per week. This is a book of their choice and they will still have reader responses to do. 

Second semester begins a new type of Reader Response. The basic idea is the same- a three paragraph response- but students have some choice about the level of difficulty and the topic. Students were assigned a level based on past work, either bubble gum pink (CHOICE), s (STANDARD), or bubble gum pink (GUIDED). The levels correspond with how much support is given within the structure of the writing. Students may change levels as the quarter moves on based on how they are doing on the writing.

 

 

FAQ:

How do I know which one to do?  Students should be choosing ONE of the reader response options each week. They should choose different ones, and not just do the same one over and over.

What if I am still reading the same book I was last week? How do I do a summary? Do a summary on what you read, not on the whole book.

Can I do it on short stories that we read in class? No. Those are books we are reading together as a class, and we have different responses we will do. You should do this on a book you are reading independently.

Can I just fill in the blanks on the yellow packet? No. You need to be re-writing it using your own information. The more information you include, the higher your grade will be. You can't fit everything you need in those little blanks. The purpose is to have you get a feel for the structure of a paragraph.

What if I think I am at the wrong level? Write me a letter. I will come find you and discuss it.

Will I always be at that level? No. As time goes on, you might need more challenges, or be feeling overwhelmed. I may ask you to change levels, or you can write me a letter and turn it in the purple box asking for a change at any time.

What if I have an idea for a response that isn't on the sheet? Talk to me! I am always looking for new ideas!
