こんにちは!

Welcome to Japanese at Anthony middle school!

My name is Yuriy Maksymovych and this is my first year at Anthony middle school. I am very excited to be a part of this community and looking forward to our learning adventures together. While I am setting up and organizing the information for this webpage section I wanted to provide a brief bio of myself to start us off.

As my name may suggest, I was born in Ukraine. I lived there for the first 10 years of my life, after which my family moved to NE Minneapolis, where I still reside. I have a deep passion for languages, and believe whole heartedly that every language has some amazing spark and peculiarity to it. As such, I have dabbled in several languages, but the only ones that I claim a comfortable proficiency in are English, Ukrainian, Japanese and Russian. Although I am very interested in not only improving those, but also expanding that list to include a few more.

As far as my educational background, I started in Ukraine, and then went to MPS in NE Minneapolis (Webster and Edison to be specific), following which I attended the University of Minnesota to aquire my B.A. in philosophy. I am currently also working on my final course to finish a M.Ed at the University of Minnesota as well. At this point in time I have teaching licenses in both Japanese and ESL.

Aside from living in Ukraine and America, I have also been fortunate enough to live in Japan for 2 years, where I taught English in the incredibly kind and welcoming city of Kyotango, within the Kyoto prefecture. There I learned more about Japanese language, culture, ideologies and a bit on how foreigners fit into the social structure of the relatively traditional society of Japan.

I respect and appreciate all languages, but to me, Japanese is a particularly beautiful and nuanced language that by its very nature is full of expression. It comes from a country rich with culture, tradition and beautiful customs and all of those things are ingrained and expressed through how the language is used. It may require more hours to aquire than languages closer to English on the language tree, but those hours are well worth the reward that one gains from a greater meta-linguistic understanding and global perspective.

We currently offer introductory 6th grade, level 1 and 2 of Japanese. I will be expanding this section of the website to reflect that in the near future. Please look forward to more information regarding the program coming soon.

If you have any questions about the program or would just like to get in touch, feel free to send me an email at any time.
