Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor

This is probably my favorite book I have read in the last six months! It has been referred to as the "Nigerian Harry Potter". Not a good description, unless you think that any book with kids and magic is just like Harry Potter! If anything, I think it would appeal more to Percy Jackson fans- the voice and the dynamics between the characters have more of the feeling of those books. I love the character of Sunny- bright, rebellious, curious, not willing to accept just anything. He friends are great complements to her- each one having their own strengths and weaknesses.

I loved the fact that it is set in Nigeria. I learned a lot about a part of the world that is new and mysterious to me.

This is a book that is very clearly the start of a series! Yay! The next book is Akata Warrior. I have started it, but not finished yet.

If there is a weakness, it that sometimes the build-up is not matched by the resolution. Things that are portrayed as being hugely difficult don't seem to actually be that hard to resolve. Maybe that is an illusion, though. Guess I will find out in the next book!
